The Salt Spring Island Climate Action Council invites you to attend our Open Houses to talk about the draft Climate Action Plan. The Plan has been developed to respond to the climate crisis, the effects of which will impact coastal communities including Salt Spring.
In 2007, the baseline year for BC communities, Salt Spring's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation fuels, electricity use, heating fuel, firewood, propane, solid waste, food, and BC Ferries fuel were estimated to be about 70,000 tonnes. Most of these emissions were attributable to food and on-island transportation.
The target for 2015 is to reduce these emissions by at least 15% or about 10,500 tonnes over 2007 levels. The target for 2020 is to reduce emissions by at least 40% or about 28,000 tonnes over 2007 levels. These targets are ambitious but achievable if we take action immediately. The draft plan draws upon the results of last year's Climate Action Workshop, and previous Salt Spring energy and GHG reduction reports. It includes input from many groups and individuals. The draft will be finalized in April 2011, after sectors are consulted. Please come out and add your comments.

Backyard composting is back in style these days to aid in the production of those delicious organic home-grown vegetables and to recycle garden waste and kitchen scraps. There are many different composting methods and wonderful "black gold" should be the end result, but sometimes results are less than perfect. Wondering how to produce better compost, recycle kitchen scraps, or dispose of pet litter in the most environmentally friendly way? Thanks to a collaboration between the Earth Festival Society, the Farmers' Institute and the Greater Victoria Compost Education Centre, a backyard composting display is being set up at the Farmers' Institute and the first workshop will be held next Thursday, August 5. A manufactured composter such as the Earth Machine (available at the recycling centre, while supplies last), a DIY pallet composter for larger quantities, or a worm bin, are suitable for uncooked vegetable waste, lawn clippings etc. and will make very good compost, given the right mix of materials and moisture. All these can easily be rodent-proofed. We will be installing and demonstrating several types of composter and a digester at the Farmers Institute as part of the backyard compost workshop on Thursday August 5 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
