Salt Spring
Energy Strategy
taking action on climate change

Youth & Schools Projects

Kelsey Mech is the new Youth Coordinator for the Energy Strategy. Kelsey is currently working on plans for the Environmental Action Day at the Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) which is scheduled for February 28, 2008.

February 28, 2008 was Environmental Action Day
at GISS (Gulf Islands Secondary School)

Thank you to all who helped to make it possible!

Fiona and Heather Munro, Youth Coordinators for the Energy Strategy, have designed and will be launching a Student Pledge Sheet that is a subset of the Salt Spring One Tonne Challenge kit for students and their families. They hope to facilitate students to feel empowered to make a difference in their homes and at school as well as in the community. Fiona and Heather will be receiving key assistance from GISS including the Drama Dept, Student Government, and GISS Principal Mr. Bell. Teachers are being contacted and a schedule and lesson plan designed to present climate change issues and the pledge forms to elementary, middle and high school classes.

Mini Alternative Car Fair

Students at Salt Spring Centre School got a chance to see some 'climate-friendly' driving alternatives at a Mini Alternative Car Fair held at the school on Friday, October 13, 2006.

Did you know that Canada produces the second-highest carbon dioxide emissions in the world?

What can Salt Springers do to help?

If we can make a change, maybe we can inspire other people to hlep stop climate change.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Don't let your car idle: after 10 seconds you use more gas to keep your car running than to restart it
  • Choose one day each week to leave your car at home: carpool, bike, walk, etc.
  • If you can, buy a hybrid car, Smart Car, scooter or other less-polluting vehicle.
  • Grow your own food: inspire your ren to get into gardening.
  • Use less electricity: turn off lights, computers or anything else that can be turned off when not in use.
  • Use less water: collect rainwater, fix leaks, turn off water when brushing teeth, etc.
  • Recycle and compost!

If you can, please help. It will make it better for all our futures!
